Hosting you own

Cloudflare · Free tier · Ownership and running costs

A small business site should not need a monthly hosting bill, and it should not leave when the person who built it stops answering emails. Both are solvable.

Written from six sites running in production right now. Every one is on the same free tier, and every one can be moved by its owner without me. The screenshots are Cloudflare’s own documentation, captured in October 2026 — pricing pages change, so check the live page for the current numbers.

The problem

Hosting is where most small-business websites quietly become hostages. A builder buys an account, the domain is registered to the builder, the site only loads while the builder’s subscription is paid, and the owner has no way in.

The bill is the smaller half of it. The larger half is that the person who can change anything is someone the owner has never met and cannot phone. It turns a five-minute fix into an email, and an email into a week, and a week into a business quietly running on outdated prices.

What I built

01

The free tier is enough, and it is documented

SSL, unmetered bandwidth and a global network on the free plan. For a small business site that is not a compromise — it is the whole requirement. The limits are published, so you can read exactly where the free plan stops rather than discovering it on an invoice.

02

The domain and the account are yours

The domain is registered in the owner’s name and the Cloudflare account belongs to them. I am added as a collaborator, which is revocable in one click. If we stop working together, you remove me and the site keeps running — there is no handover call to make. Nothing is held somewhere only I can reach.

03

Room to absorb abuse, not just to serve visitors

The enquiry endpoint is rate-limited in the Worker itself, with a per-site KV namespace rather than a shared one. A burst of spam against one site cannot lock out another client’s form, and the limit is a line of code you can read rather than a plugin you have to trust. The free plan allows 100,000 requests a day — far more headroom than a small site will ever use.

↳ the handover

Everything lives in two places you already have access to: the domain registrar and the Cloudflare dashboard. Both are yours. There is no third party to ask.

Cloudflare Free plan documentation

The free tier stays free, so there is nothing to bill you for hosting. If you want someone on call for the rest of it, the care plan is $40 a month for up to 30 minutes of changes or help.
